Western Digital Hard Drive Installation Issues?

Here is my tale of woe...My old hard drive was kaput so I went and bought a Western Digital 320 GB EIDE Drive. Now, I installed the hard drive, put in the XP CD and installation began. Now, when XP restarted it said "disk read error occurred. Please alt+ctrl+del to restart. The first time this happened it was recommended to me to purchase another hard drive. I did and the same thing happened. Did I buy a hard drive that was too large? Or am I doing something wrong? Hm...what else to say...I did not have to have a jumper. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!
