How will I be able to decorate a tree nicely when the tops been cut off?

When growing up, my mom always had trees like this. Without knowing how much was cut off, it's hard to give a clear answer, but bows look nice on the top of a tree. My mom would make a large bow and then give it long ends to d over the tree. I grew up in a victorian house and this always gave the tree a very clic look. She always used a velvety coated material, but any sturdy ribbon works. The links below give some examples.
